Treating Your ‘Yeast Problem’ Naturally
Up to 75% of all women will experience a “yeast problem” in their lifetime, and you could be part of the statistics.
Candidiasis – more commonly known as candida or yeast overgrowth – is a reality for 80 million Americans, 70% of which are women. It not only afflicts the vagina, but also provides the groundwork for other health illnesses such as allergies, asthma, depression, and even cancer.
“Many may not realize that chronic yeast infections were what actually stimulated my passion in natural medicine. I read Dr. William Crook’s book, The Yeast Connection, in the mid ’80s and eventually deployed some of his recommendations in my practice,” reveals top health expert Dr. Joseph Mercola, adding that while candida can “quickly grow out of control,” there are ways to deal with and treat it naturally.
The Lowdown on Candida
Candida – usually a harmless part of the skin, intestines, and for women, the vagina – belongs to the yeast family called Candida albicans. Its overgrowth can be triggered by many things: oral contraceptives and overuse of antibiotics, to name a few.
Dr. Mercola, however, adds that overconsumption of sugars and grains could be the culprit for candida overgrowth. This excess is a “double-edged sword”: too much yeast in the intestines leads you to crave for more sugar and carbohydrates, and the more you sugar and carbs intake you have, the more out-of-control yeast grows.
Also known as dysbiosis, this imbalance in the intestines can lead to health ailments such as the common vaginitis, food allergies, weight gain, migraine, depression, and asthma. Yeast, too, has been implicated in the emergence of cancer.
Ditch the Cream: Dealing with Candida Naturally
“Many people opt to treat yeast infections with over-the-counter anti-fungal creams, and when the symptoms go away, they assume they are cured,” observes Dr. Mercola, adding that such creams and over-the-counter medication only treat the symptoms, not the underlying candida overgrowth.
Instead, he recommends the following all-natural techniques to provide “near-immediate relief” for vaginal yeast infection:
- Boric acid powder capsule. Insert one capsule into your vagina every morning and evening for three to seven days (acute infection) or 14 to 30 days (chronic infection). You can also make this on your own by buying Boric acid powder and gelatin capsules. Boric acid is seen in studies as effective in combating yeast infections, but if irritation on your external genitalia occurs, you can get protection from Vitamin E oil.
- Garlic. Insert one clove into your vagina in the morning, then acidophilus capsule at night. Do this for three to seven days.
- Retention douche. Prepare one with bentonite clay, Pau D’ Arco tea, plain yogurt, tea tree oil and goldenseal. Douche twice a day for seven to 10 days.
- Tea tree oil. Soak a tampon with diluted tea tree oil: 1 ½ teaspoons of tea tree oil mixed with one cup of water. Let it stay in your vagina overnight.
Take Yeast Problem under Control
Dr. Mercola says that you can control yeast very well – and naturally, too – with the proper lifestyle.
According to him, it begins with good diet – one that is attuned to your nutritional type and begs off from sugars and carbohydrate-rich foods. And since candida multiplies quickly, you also have to cut down on yeast- and mold-containing foods: bread, alcohol, vinegar, fruits, peanuts, corn, and mushrooms, among others.
You shouldn’t also forget exercise, along with a good probiotic (good bacteria) intake and little or no exposure to chemicals that may trigger allergic reactions.
And do you know that getting to the core of your emotional issues can also help pin down your sugar cravings that ultimately lead to candida overgrowth? The trick is simple: try knowing your emotional dependencies, and use tools like the Meridian Tapping Technique (MTT) to properly address them.

Thank you very much for the post and for creating a good website. I have been seeking honest info on natural health and may put these recommendations to practice. I have found it hard to find honest suggestions, as there are tons of web sites with innaccurate articles. Certainly keep it flowing!
